Let me know what you think. I could probably do a bit more on the atmosphere, but I just wanted to get something down and this is what came out.</p><p>-------------------------------------------------------------------------------</p><p class="MsoNormal">The shire reeve trampled through the forest, sword in hand,
he came upon his quarry after 3 long days of hunting. The last of 6 men that
set out, he had finally found the hut of the witch who had killed his men, and
5 children as well. Oh, she would claim innocence, as they always did. But it
was clear from the unholy nature of the murders that it must have been
witchcraft at hand. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Lights shown in the window of the small hut, and smoke from
the chimney showed that someone was preparing a meal. The man approached the
hut and kicked in the door, with less effort than he would have thought, almost
as though the door opened of its own accord. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Standing over the fire was a young lady fixing some kind of
soup. She pulled out a spoonful, blew on the spoon, and put it to her lips. She
let out a sound of approval at her handiwork and put the spoon on a hook by
fire. <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">She took a look at the shire reeve, smirked at the sword in
his hand, and said to him, “Do you think that will do anything against me?”<o:p></o:p></p><p>
</p><p class="MsoNormal">The door to the hut closed by itself. <o:p></o:p></p><p><br /></p>Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-41118305097428889292023-04-10T13:22:00.000-07:002023-04-10T13:22:53.059-07:00Don't Call It A Comeback?<p> Things to work on for the new year. This is taken from what may end up being the opening of a possible zine I might make at some point.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What do you love? Me, I love a great many things but I’ve never been one of those fans that obsesses about one thing to the near exclusion of all else. I love Star Wars and Star Trek (although Star Trek to a much lesser degree if we’re being honest. And I love Babylon 5. And Flash Gordon. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I love comic books. All comic books. I am neither a DC or a Marvel or an Image or a Dark Horse guy. I can’t imagine only reading Marvel or DC books, because why cut yourself from so many good books. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I am not a horror guy but I like people that are horror people. They’re good people.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I love sports. I’m a Detroit fan and I love the Tigers and the Red Wings. I am continuously scared by the Lions. I am a bandwagon Pistons fan. I do not see a distinction between my love of comics and my love of sports. Most of the time they go hand in hand because there’s nothing more peaceful to me than reading comics with a football game on in the background. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I hate people that use the phrase “sportsball”. Ironically or ironically. Stop using it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
I love anime. Old school, new school, subbed or dubbed. Sci fi, fantasy, romance, harem, real robot, fake robot, doesn’t matter. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
…I’ll finish this later…<o:p></o:p></div>

These are just some random thoughts I have on comic books coming out on 2/8. Please note, I buy digitally, I am a cheap ass, and almost everything I buy these days is Image or old DC books. I’m also going through a bit of a Wildstorm renaissance at the moment; rereading Sleeper, buying Divine Right which is always 99 cents an issue. I reread Brian Woods DV8 miniseries the other day and was that a missed opportunity to follow up on the book. DC should think about folding them into the DCU as a foil for the Teen Titans. Anyway, comics!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
East of West #31 – Best comic on the stands. Get at me.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Birthright #22 – Also the best comic on stands. Also get at me. I like to have my cake and eat it too because who just buys cake and doesn’t eat it? “Hey, here’s a cake, let’s just look at it.”<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Green Valley #5 – I read the first issue, and it was good enough but I’m willing to wait for the series to hit a $1 sale.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Savage Dragon has published #220 issues. Spawn has published #270. Think about that.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
James Bond Felix Leiter #2 – I bring this up only because I was watching Casino Royale a few weeks ago and I really want a Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter movie. Mostly because Jeffrey Wright is bad ass and low key as hell. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Deadpool the Duck #3 – I don’t know if I should be madder at Marvel for publishing this shit or comic buyers for buying enough Deadpool spin off books to justify its publication. I’ll go with the fans because it’s more fun that way.<o:p></o:p></div>
Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-58793196200564050552017-01-24T19:25:00.000-08:002017-01-24T19:25:35.125-08:00Buy some comics. Or Don't. I'm not your robot supervisor.Here's a bunch of comics I have thoughts about that are coming out this week.<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Checkmate by Greg Rucka feels like it should be one of those series spoken of with great reverence in the same way people talk about the original Suicide Squad or American Flagg or NFL SuperPro. Checkmate comes from the post Infinite Crisis period of DC where, at least for me, they were at a creative zenith, and while it’s been a while since I’ve read it, I remember it being one of the series I anticipated most. Checkmate took what Rucka was doing on Queen and Country and applied it to the DC Universe, crafting a smart and mature spy book with plenty of politics and also robots. Checkmate is one of those DC or Marvel comic books that come out every once in a while that is enough of a departure from other superhero comics that it feels super unique. I’m glad to see this is getting a collection, although I wonder how it will read to anyone who doesn’t remember that Batman used to date his bodyguard and then she got turned into a cyborg and then she became a spy and oh yeah Mr. Terrific was cool back then. Checkmate was good, and it's cool DC is bringing it back out.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Joyride – WHY DIDN’T MORE OF YOU READ JOYRIDE?!?!?! Ah well, everything I like is doomed. Go buy Joyride. It's good.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Detective Comics #949 and I would read so many more DC books if they had any kind of digital price drop or sales but DC has opted not to and me complaining about it such a whiney thing to do. “Ohhh, why won’t DC make their comics cheaper boo hoo hoo I’m a freaking cheapskate but I still have the scruples to not pirate books wahhh.” I know, I know this is why I don’t really complain about it too much but I still resent it like hell. Anyway, I’ve read the first three issues of Rebirth Detective and I kind of want to read more. I’ll keep waiting for a sale. Because I’m a cheap bastard.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Doom Patrol #4 – I hate paying $4 for a digital comic, the story kind of doesn’t make sense and that’s largely because of being goofy for the sake of goofiness but it did have Flex Mentallo and Danny the Street (now world) and I think I’ll keep reading this. I can’t remember if I read #3 though and that’s never a good sign. Or it’s just that my memory’s shit. Probably that last one.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Hey, there’s a new Kamamdi book I guess. There’s about a 25% success rate when people take later Kirby concepts and try to revive them. I’m thinking of Walt Simonson’s Orion, and I guess people seem to like the new Moon Girl Devil Dinosaur comic but I guess that begs the question of how far afield do you have to go before something is not a Kirby concept? Didio’s Omac may count, I know some people who raved about that. I’m not going to count Final Crisis because I was thinking about it tonight and I don’t think it’s actually all that good. I may need to reread it, but then I’d be spending my time reading a comic I’ve read several times and already don’t think is all that good. And don’t tell me “Well you have to read all of Morrison’s Batman and JLA and Seven Soldiers to get it” because bleegh if I’m going to read someone’s massive run it’s going to be Hickman’s Marvel Secret Warriors/FF/Avengers/Secret Wars run.<o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Anyway, comics! Buy them. Or buy other comics. I don’t know what you like.<o:p></o:p></div>

Riding high off the success and fan love of superhero project x, actor is excited to perform as character in upcoming projects for company, including superhero movie y and superhero movie z.<br />
<br />
Character is known to be in sequel to original project, but until sequel comes out, there is plenty of opportunity for character to show up in superhero movie y, superhero movie z, and many other superhero movies. I know fans would be excited to see character show up in other projects for company, so we'll just have to see if character is inserted into those projects.<br />
<br />
Superhero project X is available to watch now and Superhero project Y is out at sometime in the future.Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-80063323736399383172014-04-08T20:24:00.000-07:002014-04-08T20:24:19.412-07:00So much awesome!!<br />

On this day in 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam launched, changing the face of anime forever. I've been rediscovering the original series through the hardcovers of Gundam: The Origin rom Vertical books and they are awesome, except for some weird placement of words inside the original word balloons.<br />
<br />
Anyway, Gundam is awesome and Universal Century is the best Gundam universe, regardless of what those insane G Gundam fans will tell you.<br />
<br />
Have fun with this.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
Over the weekend we had three nerd or nerd adjacent events
happening that would be subject to concerns about spoilers; Captain America 2,
the Game of Thrones premiere, and Wrestlemania. Now, fortunately the Game of Thrones
premiere, while good, did not have a lot going on that people could complain
about even if spoiled (that’ll come next week, trust me), so I didn’t actually
see any complaining about it, which is nice. The other two things I did see a
bit of complaining about, and it got me to ask if we complain too much about
things being spoiled.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, I’m not going to say that I haven’t complained about
something being spoiled for me in the past, and I can understand the
frustration from it. Nobody, least of all me, wants to have their enjoyment of
something ruined because someone couldn’t keep their big mouth shut. Call it The
Sixth Sense Syndrome. Ever since that movie came out, we as a film obsesses community
have become increasingly obsessed with having every single moment of a movie
not spoiled before you see the movie.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When it comes to Cap 2, I can understand why someone who
hasn’t seen it would want to go in fresh, but to be honest, that movie was so predictable
that I would call it spoiler proof. There’s one character that shows up in the
middle that’s a little surprising to see, and is awesome, but the plot beats? I
had them figured out from the commercials. One of my problems with the movie is
that it’s so damn predictable but the films writers and directors pretend like
I’m supposed to be shocked.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As for Wrestlemania, it’s a live sporting event, and even
though the WWE has a new streaming service and there is a new way to time shift
it, I’m sorry but people are going to be watching and talking about it online
live. Nobody gets to complain about the Super Bowl being spoiled for them. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In the end, my complaint is that our social media discussion
is now being determined by people who either time shift their TV watching, or
by people who either wait or don’t have the time to see a movie on the first
weekend. And again, I can understand that people with wives, kids, responsibilities,
what have you are not able to see it right away. And if you see the movie on
Thursday night and are shouting out important plot points the same night, that’s
kind of being a dick. However, if I don’t have a wife, kids, responsibilities,
what have you, why do I need to wait some mysteriously determined amount of
time to talk about something online? Why do the people who wait the longest get
to decide when I can talk about something?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is all just a part of a bigger online problem where
everyone just wants to complain about stuff, which is EXACTLY what I’m doing
now, so the snake will just continually eat its own tail. We are all Goldilocks
looking for the perfect bowl of porridge and if you follow people on twitter or
facebook who continually spoil stuff for you, maybe stop following them. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I don’t know, sometimes I just get sick of seeing people
complain about the horror of having stuff spoiled and I just needed to vent
about it. I recognize I am a hypocrite about it, if that helps. And if I have
such a need to talk about something I just saw, or something I watched live,
maybe I should be finding a place to talk to like-minded people. Maybe twitter,
which is my primary social media, isn’t the best place for these kinds of discussions.
I hate message boards though, so maybe the problem is me and I just need to not
worry so much about this. I like to think I’m pretty good about censoring
myself and not ruining things for others.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Anyway, agree/disagree, my rant is over and you can go on
with your day. I think I may try to get back to using this blog more often. Who
the hell knows.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">What do you get when you add five writers, three artists, and one all-powerful force of nature? Why, it’s Marvel Comics next big event! On Tuesday, Marvel formally announced Avengers VS X-men, a twelve issue mini-series launching in April 2012. The series is written by five of Marvel’s biggest writers; Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Jonathan Hickman, Ed Brubaker, and Matt Fraction. Joining them on art duties will be John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel, and Adam Kubert. The series will ship bi-weekly, and will also be available in comic stores and on the Marvel comics app on the same day. Marvel is also going to offer a code to download a free digital copy with each print copy, at no extra cost. Marvel has also set up a website just for the series at <a href="http://avx.marvel.com/">http://avx.marvel.com</a>. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">According to Marvel, Avengers Vs. X-Men<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>starts off with the teams learning that the Phoenix Force, the power of life and rebirth that is generally associated with Jean Grey of the X-Men, is on its way to Earth to choose a new host. The return of the Phoenix leads to a decision that pits two of comics biggest teams against each other in a story that will be sure to CHANGE EVERYTHING AS YOU KNOW IT!!!!! All kidding aside, who doesn’t like to see a big throw down between heroes for no good reason? Marvel Entertainment Editor in Chief Axel Alonso had this to say about the series: “Avengers VS X-Men brings together the most powerful forces in comics for a super hero war like you’ve never seen before and will never see again. We all want to see the best of the best go against each other—Lakers & Celtics; Ali & Frazier; Yankees & Red Sox; and in comics it’s the Avengers fighting the X-Men.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We’ve brought together the biggest writers, biggest artists and biggest characters for the biggest story we’ve ever told. This is the kind of high-octane action-packed story that fans demand while also having a profound effect on every character involved—and reshaping the Marvel Universe in its wake.”</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">If you’re like me, you’ve seen a lot of these events from Marvel and DC over the last few years, and you may or may not be getting a little tired of see them. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that Marvel’s last event, Fear Itself, left me a little cold and is making me a little leery about this one. The other thing I’m worried about is the FIVE writers bringing this thing to life. Will they be able to bring a cohesive vision to the series, or will it come off as being written by a committee? I worry that this is going to be the classic example of too many cooks in the kitchen. On the other hand, the series does have three of my favorite artists working on it, and I’m also a big Marvel fan, and this is the kind of thing I enjoy. I hope that they go for a more light-hearted tone and not make the thing overly serious, but somehow I doubt that is what we will get. I want to read a fun event with some crazy action. I don’t want to see Cyclops crying over the body of a fallen teammate. I’ll have to wait and see what tone Marvel seems to be going for before I decide if I will pick this up.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">So, are you excited to read this or does it just seem like more of the same? Let us know what you think about Avengers VS X-Men in the comments below. Do you think it will end with the marriage of Danger and The Vision? How will the fight affect<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the Black Panther and Storm? Will this really be the return of Jean Grey? How is it all going to end?</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;"><br />

<br />
If you don't know me, I review a fair amount of stuff over at <a href="http://www.geeksofdoom.com/">Geeks of Doom</a>, and when I review said stuff, I grade on a straight # out of five scale. By this I mean I don't use any half points, and my basic meaning of my score goes like this:<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
1 out of 5: Avoid at all costs. This product has no redeeming value. This is a very rare score and is reserved for truly awful material.<br />
2 out of 5: Avoid. Not recommended. There may be some redeeming value, but only to people of a very specific taste that certainly isn't mine. You may like it, but I really didn't. Fairly common score, but I don't particularly like giving it out. I'd much rather spend my time talking about things I actually want others to check out.<br />
3 out of 5: Decent, but with some problems. This is probably my most used score. 3 means that there are things I didn't like about the given item I am reviewing, but that there are people out there who may not find the same problems. When reviewing a comic, this may mean that I liked the writing but didn't like the art, or vice versa. Or it could just be that the item as a whole was basically mediocre. There's nothing specifically wrong with it, it just wasn't a slam dunk.<br />
4 out of 5: Very good. There are very few things wrong with the item, it just missed that little bit that is needed for it to be spectacular. This is also a fairly common score. a 4 means that I wholeheartedly recommend whatever it is I am reviewing. There may be a few problems, possibly glaring problems, but there is enough good to counteract those problems. I had a good time with this and think 90% my audience will have a good time as well.<br />
5 out of 5: The best of the best of the best, sir. This is a prime example of whatever medium the item is in. If it is a comic, this means the writing and the art work together in perfect harmony. If you don't like this, then I don't know whats wrong with you. I don't give a 5 out very often, because I reserve 5's for the very best. If you get a 5 from me, you deserve it.<br />
<br />
Now, I spell these out for you, because I want everyone to know where I am coming from when I review something. I don't give out scores on a lark. I put a lot of thought into each score that I hand out. And I often find myself agonizing over the difference between giving something a 3 or a 4. That seems to be the biggest problem I have. Sometimes things are very close to being a 4, but there are just too many problems for me to award it that score. Most of the other ones are pretty clear cut. If something is really bad, it's REALLY bad, and if it's good, it's REALLY good.<br />
<br />
Now you may be saying, "Well, if you have so much problem, just use half points." And to you I say, fie on your half points, I work on a straight 5 out of 5 system! It's just a personal choice that I have made, and I would love to sit down with other reviewers and discuss what they are most comfortable with. I feel like if you are going to use half points, you may as just use a # out of 10 system.<br />
<br />
I also wonder what the people reading my reviews find most helpful, or if they even pay that much attention to the score. Has my score ever convinced someone to buy something they haven't, or am I just looking to get that score written on the back or hopefully front of a comic. (Which is not to say I don't want my score used to help sell a book. Believe me, I LIVE to see Geeks of Doom with pull quotes on books. It's like food for me.) Do you, the humble reader prefer half points? Do you like a score to be out of 10? Do you maybe prefer letter grade scores? Do letter grade scores translate well? These are questions I would love to know, just so I could better serve my reading public.<br />
<br />
Because, in the end, that is who I am writing for. Sure, I first and foremost write for myself, because I enjoy writing, and as it turns out my preferred form of writing is reviews. Some people were put on the Earth to tell stories, I was put on the Earth to nitpick those stories. Maybe I saw History of the World Part 1 too early in life and somehow connected with the caveman who pissed on the first artists cave painting. I don't know. This is just who I am.<br />
<br />
Anyway, I've got a review to finish, and these things ain't going to review themselves.Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-37701006026200035832011-10-21T16:14:00.000-07:002011-10-21T16:14:35.787-07:00It's New Comics Thursday!!And it's a day late, but you'll just have to get over it.<br />

Still in New York City, enjoying some crappy weather now and some great comics people. NYCC is quickly becoming one of my favorite shows of the year and this is shaping up to be my best show ever in terms of actual interviews and facetime with people. But that's not why we're here. We're here for some football! I'm too tired and there's only one game worth caring about tomorrow, although I will talk about one others. So let's jump in.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Eastern Michigan at Central Michigan - I don't want to scare anyone, but Eastern Michigan is 3-3 and could get back to a winning record again with a win over the Chippewas. Is this an official changing of the guards among the Michigan MAC teams? I sure hope not, but I have to admit that it could be. When Eastern hired Ron English as head coach I knew they would be an improved team at some point. I didn't expect the rough years they have had the last couple years, but it appears they have finally turned the corner. Now, I know nothing about Eastern's team, because they have been one of the laughing stocks of college football for a long time, but it looks like I might need to. Do I think they will beat Central? No, I do not. Even though Central has the worse record in this contest, I still have some faith in them. Radcliff has looked okay, this is a home game, and somewhat of a rivalry and I think the Chips will come out for this one. Central has struggled against bigger team, but has played well against MAC teams (except for Western, of which we will not speak of again). Look for Radcliff to pass to Cody Wilson all day long. I'm going to go out on a limb and make a Central win my Stone Cold Lock of the Century. Of the Week.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrirO7777wLm-Zf66C3C3piIJieWRGzw5xGwU1jSzgteWxgaxYF1Jh7qXWUOwLW6XjDV8foJGC1fdSHzspKheULG5ogasg3diLhRTvSMpyB6kb3UtrPkfI4RgNj8Kg-QFwWYCink6LqU/s1600/2011-07-27_140332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrirO7777wLm-Zf66C3C3piIJieWRGzw5xGwU1jSzgteWxgaxYF1Jh7qXWUOwLW6XjDV8foJGC1fdSHzspKheULG5ogasg3diLhRTvSMpyB6kb3UtrPkfI4RgNj8Kg-QFwWYCink6LqU/s320/2011-07-27_140332.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
#11 Michigan at #23 Michigan State - I remain unimpressed by U of M's high ranking. They are definitely the most over-ranked team in the country. Which is not to say they are bad, they just haven't played anyone really tough and they have looked questionable at times. Their defense is much improved and the offense under Denard "Shoelace" Robinson has the same potency as last year, if not more because by this point in the season last year Shoelace was injured and spent and never caught the same magic of those first few weeks. This year, Robinson is still playing well and making a name for himself in the Heisman chase.<br />
<br />
On the other side is a State team that has the #1 defense in the country, but everyone knows they haven't really played anyone and that stat is really padded by that 46 yards allowed game against Florida Atlantic. Is this really a dominant defense? I don't really think so, but they had a bye last week, and they looked pretty convincing against Ohio State, so they maybe could be. This is going to be the game that decides what State's team really is.<br />
<br />
Going back to U of M, we have a defense that is playing well and is keeping them in games that they would have lost last year. The new Defensive Coordinator is making a big difference already and they still have room for improvement. Again, has the defense honestly played well, or have they just been beating inferior teams? We will find out.<br />
<br />
Finally, we have the State offense, which was supposed to be much better than what they have shown this year. QB Kirk Cousins has shown flashes of brilliance, but has not been up to the same level it looked like he was at last year. The three headed monster at running back hasn't come together, mostly because of an inexperienced O-line. The question will be how they perform this week, and can they show up for the game.<br />
<br />
Now, the intangibles. State has won the last three years, taking advantage of weak U of M teams, and I'm sure the seniors would love to walk out with an unbeaten streak against their main rival. Meanwhile, this is first year U of M coach Brady Hoke's chance to put his stamp on the program, and get a lot of good will in Ann Arbor while he's at it. A win would legitimize the program and his short tenure, and would go a long way towards getting them off many over-rated lists. The game is at East Lansing, which is always a big factor in this game.<br />
<br />
So what will the outcome be? In my opinion, I look for Michigan to walk away with the big win. Robinson has proved to be as good as we thought he was last year, and he has adapted well to Hoke's new system, while maintaining the things that make him Shoelace. He will prove this State D to be a paper tiger. Meanwhile, U of M defense is going to prove themselves by shutting down a weak offense. I don't want to underestimate State, but I just don't think they're that good of a team. There will be lots of crying and burnt coaches in East Lansing tomorrow night, as U of M goes back home with a 7-0 record, a guaranteed bowl berth, and a smile on their faces. Go Blue!Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-13959904529781724992011-10-13T07:16:00.000-07:002011-10-13T07:16:10.055-07:00It's New Comics Thursday!!It's new comics Thursday, and that can only mean one thing!<br />

<a name='more'></a>As I was thinking about the Tigers win last night, my mind moved to the Lions/bears game on Monday night, and all the energy that all Michigan sports teams seem to be sharing right now.It seems like every sports team in Michigan can do no wrong, at least for the past week. The Tigers are in the playoffs. The Lions are 4-0 and heading into the first Monday night game at home in a decade. The Red Wings are starting another should-be playoff bound season. The Wolverines are 5-0 and way over-ranked but still the #12 team in the country. The Spartans are doing well, ranked #20 in one poll (and inexplicably unranked in the other). There is only one week till the U of M/State game. Hell, even Central Michigan won against Northern Illinois and perhaps most shocking of all, is that Eastern Michigan has a winning record.<br />
<br />
So anyway, I was laying in bed, naked (as is my want), thinking about what a great time it is to be a sports fan in MI, and I realized what the NHL should have done this year for the Winter Classic or at least what they should do in 2017 when January 1st falls on Sunday again. Here is my idea. Noon kickoff, Bears at Lions at Ford Field. 4:30pm puck drop, Hawks at Wings right next to Ford Field at Comerica Park. Or, flip it around a little, 3:30 puck drop at Comerica, 8:00pm kickoff at Ford Field. In the second scenario, both games could be on NBC and feed off each other.<br />
<br />
Now I know, the whole hockey in a baseball stadium is a bit played out, and it's not like the CoPa can match Wrigley or Fenway for the atmosphere that their hockey games had, but it's all about the collective energy of the state. Think if they had been able to schedule this game this year when there is so much buzz surrounding the Lions. So, I understand that this idea probably only appeals to me. And I also realize that there is no way the parking in downtown Detroit could support this, but how COOL would that set up be?<br />
<br />
Very cool. That's how much.<br />
<br />
Anyway, that's just my thought. if the NFL and NHL want to use this idea, all I ask for in return is a suite for both games. Thank you, and goodday.Classic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-35466420842187973042011-10-06T16:01:00.000-07:002011-10-06T16:01:28.494-07:00It's New Comics Thursday!!It's new comics Thursday, and that can only mean one thing!<br />

It's week five, which means big conference games are starting this week. There are several important games this week across every conference, including possible Big 10, SEC and MAC championship previews. So, let's take a look.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>Toledo at Temple - At the start of the year, Toledo was thought to be one of the premier teams of the MAC and certainly a threat to win the MAC west. However, thanks to a pretty brutal non-conference schedule, including games against Boise State and Ohio State, they have only gotten off to a 1-3 start. But, when you play in the MAC, the season doesn't really start until you get into the conference schedule, and this will be the first chance we get to see them against equal talent. And remember, Toledo played Boise pretty well, and took Ohio State to the wire, and should have beaten Syracuse if not for inept officiating, so we know they can be a tough team. Temple, likewise, had high hopes for a MAC East title, and an easy path to the MAC Championship. Temple has had an easier first month of the season, and have a conference win in the back, having handled Akron easily, and taking care of Maryland, which is a big win. Both of these teams are going to rely on their running game, and the battle today will be in the trenches. I think Toledo is going to take this one in a close game, but Temple is going to have another shot later in the year in Detroit at the championship.<br />
<br />
Minnesota at #19 Michigan - Yeah, this is an easy one. Michigan is already up 14 as I write this. Minnesota is still a really bad team, and Michigan is going to roll to another 5-0 start. The real season starts next week. Michigan by a ton. This is an easy pick for the STONE COLD LOCK OF THE CENTURY...OF THE WEEK!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrirO7777wLm-Zf66C3C3piIJieWRGzw5xGwU1jSzgteWxgaxYF1Jh7qXWUOwLW6XjDV8foJGC1fdSHzspKheULG5ogasg3diLhRTvSMpyB6kb3UtrPkfI4RgNj8Kg-QFwWYCink6LqU/s1600/2011-07-27_140332.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvrirO7777wLm-Zf66C3C3piIJieWRGzw5xGwU1jSzgteWxgaxYF1Jh7qXWUOwLW6XjDV8foJGC1fdSHzspKheULG5ogasg3diLhRTvSMpyB6kb3UtrPkfI4RgNj8Kg-QFwWYCink6LqU/s320/2011-07-27_140332.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Northern Illinois at Central Michigan - It's been a tough month for the Chips, and things don't get easier today. NIU is another tough team in the MAC and they are going to run all over us today. Nothing about CMU has told me that they have it in them to stop good teams, and I don't think today is going to change my opinion. The Chips have looked, let's be brutally honest, awful. Ryan Radcliff is not a good quarterback, and the defense couldn't stop an....easily stoppable thing. I'm not expecting much. As a Central fan, I'm pretty much back into the hope for a win but expect a loss mode. Such is life. NIU by a ton and I have to accept the harassment of NIU friends.<br />
<br />
Michigan State at Ohio State - It's gut check time for State (the Michigan flavor, Ohio State is never to be referred to as "State"). State has looked good against their weaker opponents (see the Central game last week) but got embarrassed against Notre Dame, and no one is thinking of them as a Big 10 championship contender, let alone a National Championship caliber team. A win today can get them back in at least the Big 10 conversation. Ohio State is still missing several of their starters due to last years shenanigans, so if State wants to beat them, now is the time. I'm not sure how this will go. Ohio State has proven that they are a very beatable team, but that Notre Dame game just puts too many doubts about State in my mind. If State can focus on their running game and not try to get too fancy, they shouldn't have any problems. I'm going to go with my heart and pick Michigan State to win. I hope I'm not wrong because I HATE when Ohio State wins.<br />
<br />
#3 Alabama at #12 Florida - This is the big SEC game of the day. LSU was able to jump over Alabama in the rankings last week, mostly because the Rolling Tide hasn't played as many tough teams this year, but this is their first real test and it comes against an improved Florida team that is getting it's swagger back and is looking for a big win themselves. This is what we call a statement game. Both teams feature strong running games and stifling defenses, so it could make for a low scoring affair. These teams are very similar, with nearly identical stats and play style. I think Alabama has the edge in talent and in coaching and that's going to make the difference and get the win for the Tide. Remember though, regardless of who wins, both teams will remain in the hunt for their respective divisional titles, and we could see them play again later in the year.<br />
<br />
#8 Nebraska at #7 Wisconsin - And now we come to the other night game, and again, a possible preview of the first Big 10 Championship game. Nebraska plays it's very first Big 10 conference game and they draw the best team in the conference. Nebraska has come out and won their first four games, but haven't looked that great doing it. Quarterback Taylor Martinez can be electrifying at times and frightening for Husker fans. Meanwhile Wisconsin quarterback Russell Wilson has lived up to all the hype of the off-season. We knew that Wisconsin was going to have a nearly unstoppable running attack, and Wilson has given them the necessary air attack that they needed. Wisconsin is scoring an average of 48.5 points per game. Nebraska isn't that far behind with 42.8 points. However, Wisconsin has gotten the edge so far in terms of defenseClassic McDavidhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14861904897451369371noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-168824708389059336.post-62045998623605833622011-09-30T11:48:00.000-07:002011-09-30T11:48:51.105-07:00Chris' Cooking Corner: BACON!!!!!!!!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh624SgHdIKEcdVfI48qY4SXR1B2Ez_QXNRrp7uh6CbwYQK5m_WlH3m1oGFbaL4L9DBIO77zkD_xBEpqtfijMssfiB1FimPpTUTutlaLRckzlA5OFV9GIdCSHG8VuYoJHHQUbbVymJ6Wug/s1600/images3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh624SgHdIKEcdVfI48qY4SXR1B2Ez_QXNRrp7uh6CbwYQK5m_WlH3m1oGFbaL4L9DBIO77zkD_xBEpqtfijMssfiB1FimPpTUTutlaLRckzlA5OFV9GIdCSHG8VuYoJHHQUbbVymJ6Wug/s1600/images3.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Guess who's back in the kitchen? Why, it's just little old me. Today for lunch I had possibly the greatest idea for a sandwich, but the whole thing failed in the execution, mostly because of the time of year we are in, so I don't blame the chef that much. The sandwich I had was a fried green tomato BLT. It was your classic BLT, but with a fried green instead of a regular tomato. <br />
<a name='more'></a>Now, some of you may be turning your nose up at the fried green part of the equation, and I can understand that. In my family, only me and my mother like the fried greens, and it is a connection that only we have, so that makes it kind of special to me. In my heart, I'm a bit of a southern boy, and this is one of those dishes that goes to my heart, both figuratively and literally. Anywho, not everyone likes the fried green tomatoes, and I'll be covering the preparation of those another time. Today, I am just going to show you how to make perfect bacon, so you can make a plain old BLT, which is pretty much the Duke of sandwiches (the King being the Monte Cristo Sandwich).<br />
<br />

There is one key word to talk about when you want to make great bacon, and that word is: Oven. If you want to make great bacon, you have to bake it in an oven. Trust me, I have tried to make bacon the traditional way of frying, and I ruin it every time. It's either burned and over cooked, or it's under cooked and all flaccid. Once I switched to oven bacon, I get perfect bacon every time. And it doesn't take much longer than the traditional method. It is a win-win for bacon lovers.<br />

Here's what you will need to make this:<br />
<br />
Bacon<br />
Oven<br />
<br />
That's about it. You will need a baking dish, some tin foil, and a baking rack or two. Unless you want a grease fire, in which case by all means just throw the bacon in the oven. (Please note: classicmcdavid.com does not promote the placing of raw bacon in you oven, starting fires, or possible insurance fraud. DO NOT place bacon in the oven. Also, buy yourself some oven mitts, those pans get HOT!). <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1maxlsbd_v5gNjoPdluCf4Eq2v8P3wLUkeZU7qTVyMOWFpPgmDldAdZxGJ54avEkAaptGKwcrWl-Z3NEwUUNWauyEro-hY4ou7dpIl0JSALGzPOoOk3dFAshs2aSkmox4PGFkRYJXIIs/s1600/images5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1maxlsbd_v5gNjoPdluCf4Eq2v8P3wLUkeZU7qTVyMOWFpPgmDldAdZxGJ54avEkAaptGKwcrWl-Z3NEwUUNWauyEro-hY4ou7dpIl0JSALGzPOoOk3dFAshs2aSkmox4PGFkRYJXIIs/s1600/images5.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Okay, let's talk bacon. What kind do you like? Buy that. My personal preference is for any kind of maple syrup infused bacon. It's delicious, and it fills the house with the most glorious smell in the world, and the smell lingers for like, a week. If you're not a fan, don't buy that. I'm not going to twist your arm. For the purposes of this recipe, let's say about a half pound of bacon.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG80uRa5ih-jfocckbAaiDV4B0RnThiR9chX0dgnE8vZ0GH-eRQjwU_7cHhM8-Mmwjjv_1DTS7BYUtEr4bViL5ppOMY-QkPvlPs3wMP3lvi8xatFIfzyD2bzEW8A1DhWLFBLjm5y2wUD0/s1600/images4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjG80uRa5ih-jfocckbAaiDV4B0RnThiR9chX0dgnE8vZ0GH-eRQjwU_7cHhM8-Mmwjjv_1DTS7BYUtEr4bViL5ppOMY-QkPvlPs3wMP3lvi8xatFIfzyD2bzEW8A1DhWLFBLjm5y2wUD0/s1600/images4.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Get out your baking sheet. The baking sheet doesn't have to be fancy or deep, just a simple cookie sheet will work. You do want to make sure it has some kind of lip around it or some other means of keeping the grease in the sheet, not dripping onto the heating elements of your oven. Now, line the bottom of your baking sheet with tin foil. This will help on the clean up side, because bacon is greasy, and you don't want to have to clean up congealed bacon grease off of your nice bacon sheets. Isn't that a pleasant thought? Anyway, line the baking sheet and the place a couple of baking racks on top. This is going to keep the bacon you are cooking out of the grease that will eventually be released from the bacon. This will lead to crispier, tastier, and healthier bacon. <br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Qmtly8FLyAhpX0qesJi5ygUf7GrvbsxWCALx9Ls9KFy0AXpRK8ntAkeNMoYeyuXdVDSR3VBxGUNKm_5Yp2JVaQvAL6QgKhK911cWerF_9AD7Hwb1buUnnM-HC3hvM2Uftf7D3nNPz1k/s1600/imagesCALHYI93.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" kca="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Qmtly8FLyAhpX0qesJi5ygUf7GrvbsxWCALx9Ls9KFy0AXpRK8ntAkeNMoYeyuXdVDSR3VBxGUNKm_5Yp2JVaQvAL6QgKhK911cWerF_9AD7Hwb1buUnnM-HC3hvM2Uftf7D3nNPz1k/s1600/imagesCALHYI93.jpg" /></a></div><br />
Once you have your cooking apparatus prepared, place the strips of bacon on the baking racks. In my family, we usually cut the regular sized slices of bacon in half. This leads to better sizes for sandwich making and also spreads out the slices more evenly among a bunch of hungry mouths. Place the bacon on the racks, give them a little breathing room, and then prepare for cooking.<br />
<br />
Do not pre-heat your oven. This is an important step, or at least I believe it is. Every recipe I've seen online on how to bake bacon lists this as an important step, and 40 Helens can't be wrong. Place the bacon in the oven, and then turn the heat on to 400 degrees. Set the timer for 20 minutes, and sit back, although you may want to keep an eye out every few minutes to watch for grease fires or anything. Remember, safety FIRST!!! If my mother taught me anything, it's that. And to never ask a girl if she likes butt sex on the first date. Once the 20 minutes is up, check the bacon, see if it's prepared to your liking. I like mine a little undercooked, but if you like yours a little crispier, by all means leave it in for a while longer. I'm sure there's an internal temperature that your supposed to let the bacon cook to, but I don't cotton with those fancy schmancy internal temps. But seriously, follow any heating instructions you can find. classicmcdavid.com also does not cotton to stomach parasites or food poisoning. In fact the eradication of stomach parasites is part of our mission statement, or at least it will be once I make a mission statement.<br />
<br />
That's about it. This is actually really easy to do, and the end result is the best bacon you will ever eat. It's not greasy, you get the right crispiness to it. It is se magnific, or something. Once you try this, you will never cook bacon in a pan ever again. And with that I say, Kill Flanders.<br />
<br />
